Your First Appointment
Whether your general dentist has referred you to The Bay Orthodontics, or you’ve approached us directly, your first face-to-face appointment will take the form of a no-obligation consultation. During the consultation, you’ll meet your orthodontist and they’ll assess your smile.
The consultation is nothing to worry about and you’ll have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you like, so you feel comfortable before committing to any treatment.
Step 1: Assessment
Your orthodontist will carry out a clinical examination of your teeth and jaw to review your orthodontic needs. They may take X-rays of your teeth during the appointment. This helps your orthodontist decide if you’re suitable for treatment and which type is best for you.
Step 2: Outcomes
Once they’ve assessed your teeth. There are generally two possible outcomes, which are: You’re ready for treatment and need to decide whether to go ahead. Your dental health might need improving, which may be due to tooth decay. Your orthodontist will recommend you visit your general dentist
Step 3: Your options
If you’re ready to start treatment, we’ll talk you through everything you need to know so you can make an informed decision. This includes your treatment options, the pros and cons of each treatment, how long your teeth straightening might take and the costs involved.
Step 4: Any questions
You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. Having your teeth straightened is a big decision and you need to make sure it’s the right one for you. If you need time to think, you can take home all the information and let us know if you’d like to proceed.
What happens next ?
If you choose to go ahead with treatment, you’ll need to sign a written consent form to say you’re happy to proceed.
Your orthodontist will be with you through your treatment journey and you’ll have regular check-ups to adjust your braces. Many of our practices also have dedicated treatment coordinators to guide you through your journey.

What to expect
Our treatment coordinator will contact you to provide a free telephone consultation where we will discuss the services we provide, payment options and what your expectations are. Once we have confirmed you are dentally fit for orthodontic treatment, we will offer a face-to-face consultation with one of our specialist orthodontists.
A consultation to see a specialist Orthodontist is a £50 nonrefundable deposit to be paid when booking the consultation.
1. Consultations are to discuss options and suitability for treatment. You may require a more in-depth clinical examination or diagnostic tests before treatment options can be discussed.
2. Children under 18 can be referred for a free NHS assessment, subject to meeting the NHS qualifying criteria.
